Colours to Help You Feel Creative in Your Kitchen

Colour influences how we feel about any space and the best colours for any room, including the kitchen, are always going to be the ones that inspire us to spend more time there.

I have seen kitchens painted in darkest blue, which is a colour not naturally associated with food because it’s effect can suppress the appetite, and also glossy, high tech black, white, or grey kitchens that can feel a little clinical. However, if you’re drawn to deeper, darker or statement colours for your kitchen, I’d suggest adding more appeal by using complementary or “accent” colours for your kitchen utensils, splash back panels, tableware, or furniture. The effect will be to liven up the space and draw your eye around the room.

If you enjoy food and cooking, you’ll be more inspired by surrounding yourself in your kitchen with natural colours, or warm orange, red-tinted colours and spicier shades which can increase food enjoyment and stimulate the appetite. Or try bright and clear green colours that feel fresh and appealing.

Even the more subtle, lighter, or less intense versions of these colours will have a positive influence, so don’t be afraid to try a new-to-you colour in a lighter variation. Or pepper smaller amounts of stronger colour in and around your kitchen by painting the inside of drawers and cupboards for a little unexpected colour-wow.
