So you'd love a Warhol
Just image owning a piece of original art that you bought for £500 only for it to be worth millions in the future.
Art purchased from a once unknown artist named Andy Warhol was sold for sub $1,000 yet Andy Warhol went on to become a legend with his most expensive piece selling for over $105m in 2013.
Interestingly enough if you really wanted an original Andy Warhol piece and you knew where to find one, some are still on sale for sub £15,000.
Art is an eclectic fusion of different styles and influences, covering millions of pieces. New artists are developing art every day, some will become classics and highly sought after in the future, it's just a case of knowing where to look and what to look for.
For instance the then unknown artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat’s started his art career in 1977 painting informal graffiti with his classmate in Lower Manhatten.
In 1981 only 4 years later Basquiat sold his first painting, Cadillac Moon (1981), to singer Debbie Harry, the lead singer of punk band Blondie, for only $200.
Fast forward to 2017, a Japanese businessman and collector, Yusaku Maezawa purchased Basquiat's piece Untitled (1982), a powerful depiction of a black skull with red and yellow rivulets, at auction for a record-setting $110.5. The most ever paid for an American artwork, and the sixth most expensive piece of art sold at an auction.
It just goes to show when it comes to art, from paintings to sculpture, you simply never know the future value. All the same, if you passed up on buying a piece of Jean-Michel’s work back in the early 80’s I bet you’d regret it today.
